The extreme engineering challenge

This competition is for teams of KS3 and KS4 students that will engage them in working on a real design brief set by Hope Technology.

Hope Technology are an engineering company based in Lancashire who manufacture high quality mountain bike components, and they would like to involve your students in the development of a promotional product to be distributed at the Cycle Show in London.

What do you need to do?

Mono M4 caliper and rotorThe competition is split into two age categories, and the design brief is slightly different for each. Hope Technology has set the following requirements for the products and how you present them, and the competition will be judged against these:

  1. They must promote the Hope Technology brand in a creative and innovative way.
  2. The final products will be manufactured from aluminium or stainless steel as shown in the film, but you can model your product in materials that are available at your school.
  3. The presentations that you send to us must be clear, concise and interesting.

The KS3 extreme engineering challenge
moto leversWorking in a team of up to four students, design and develop a 2D promotional product that can be manufactured out of 2mm thick stainless steel using a laser cutter. The final product will be machined prior to the show from a piece of material that has a maximum size of 150mm x 150mm.

The KS4 extreme engineering challenge
Mono 6 caliper onlyHope are going to have a Mori Seiki multi-axis CNC machine at the cycle show and would like to use this to manufacture a gift product for visitors as they watch!

Working in a team of up to four students, design and develop a 3D promotional product that will be manufactured on this machine. The final product will be machined from a round billet with a diameter of 100mm and no longer than 100mm in length.

 

What can you win?

The prizes for each age category are as follows:

  • 1st Prize – £500 for each team member to personalise their bike with Hope Technology kit. Educational resources worth over £1000 for the school. A fully paid visit to Hope Technology to have their winning design professionally developed and manufactured for the Cycle Show and an expenses paid day at the Cycle Show in London to showcase their design and hand out the products to visitors
  • 2nd Prize – £300 for each team member to personalise their bike with Hope Technology kit. Educational resources worth over £1000 for the school. 10 free tickets for the Cycle Show
  • 3rd Prize - £200 for each team member to personalise their bike with Hope technology kit. Educational resources worth over £1000 for the school. 10 free tickets for the Cycle Show

All entries will receive a free Hope Technology promotional pack including stickers and other items.

A panel of judges from Hope Technology and the SSAT will judge all entries.

We may invite entrants to showcase their work at related SSAT events.

 

How to enter

Register electronically to enter the competition by emailing a contact name (probably a teacher), the name of your school and a phone number to extremeengineering@ssatrust.org.uk by 20 June 2008.

All entries must be electronic and can be in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, video, website or just photographs. We are looking for an interesting, creative concept that the Hope Technology team can develop with your school. For this competition KS3 is years 7-9 and KS4 is years 10 and 11. The decision of the judges is final as to the awarding of the prizes. All prizes are subject to availability.
